The Democracy Monument is the focal point of the grand, famous landmarks and political symbols. As the name suggests, it was erected to commemorate Thailand’s momentous transformation from absolute to constitutional monarchy.
There are 75 cannonballs around the base, symbolizing the year BE 2475 (AD 1932). The four wings of the monument are 24 meters tall, representing June 24, the day the constitution was signed. The central platform is 3 meters high (June was then the third month in the Thai calendar) and holds a carved constitution. On each wing, there are bas-reliefs showing soldiers, police, and civilians who took part in creating the modern Thai state. In times of military rule, people have gathered here to demand democracy, especially in 1973 and 1992.
